PubMed Overview:
PubMed is a valuable resource that facilitates the search and retrieval of biomedical and life sciences literature, aiming to improve global and personal health. The PubMed database contains over 30 million citations and abstracts of biomedical literature. While it does not provide full-text journal articles, it often includes links to the full text from other sources such as the publisher's website or PubMed Central (PMC). First made available to the public in 1996, PubMed is developed and maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), located at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
About the Content:
Citations in PubMed cover a wide range of biomedical and health subjects, as well as related areas including life sciences, behavioral sciences, chemical sciences, and bioengineering. PubMed allows users to search across several other NLM literature resources:
- MEDLINE: The largest component of PubMed, containing citations from journals selected for MEDLINE. These articles are indexed with Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and curated with various metadata such as funding information, genetic data, and chemical information.
- PubMed Central (PMC): The second largest component of PubMed, consisting of citations for articles available in full-text on PMC. These articles come from journals reviewed and selected by NLM for archiving purposes, as well as individual articles collected to comply with funder policies.
- Bookshelf: The final component of PubMed, providing citations for books and some individual chapters accessible on Bookshelf. Bookshelf is a comprehensive archive of books, reports, databases, and other documents relevant to biomedical, health, and life sciences.
